Mangaluru: Brahmashree Narayana Guru Study Chair and the new building of applied botany department at Mangalore University were inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, on Thursday at University campus Konaje.
Speaking on the occasion CM said that Mngaluru University is the first university in Karnataka to set up a chair for the study of saint.
“Rs 2 crore has been granted for the set up of chair out of which Rs 1 crore has been sanctioned already. Brahmashree Narayana Guru’s ideologies are still relevant to the society and needed to be following it,” he said.
Minister for higher education Basavaraj Rayareddy said that when discipline is considered amng the universities, Mangaluru University make its way at the top. It provides and maintains high-tech facilities and laboratories.
“The government has reserved Rs 25 crore for the higher education sector, as it faces tough competition from other varsities. Tender has been called to provide free computer education to SC/ST students,” he added.
Sportsmen who achieved in national level sports meet were felicitated during the occasion by district in-charge Minister Ramanath Rai.
Former minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, University Vice-Chancellor Prof K Byrappa, Registrar A M Khan and others were present.
