Puttur: There are no forest check-posts of forest police squads left anymore to prevent any jungle offences committed by poachers and criminals to carry away wood etc illegally.
Only those check-posts under department’s records have survived in 4 talukas of Dakshina Kannada district excluding Mangalore taluka. All the additional check-posts started by local officials within each sector’s forest office scope are closed down.
At Uppinangady sector, only Gundya forest check-post has continued. In Bantwal taluka, Ukkuda check post, Jalsoor in Sullia area, and charmadi check-post in Belthangady forest office area, are still there.
Those in Uppinangady, Manihalla, Kulkunda are no longer in existence, but Kotekar checkpost in Mangalore, in Sampaje, and for interstate timber transport permits check-posts created in Ukkada and Jalsoor, are working on. Those posts cancelled by the state, but earlier run by departmental officials for their convenience only have become ‘gates’ such as Sullia Hale (old) gate, to the people who call them for want of a better name.
