Mangalore : The CITU organized a Dharna in front of DC Office on March 22, Thursday demanding the purified drinking water to every common man to mark the ‘World Water Day’.
Addressing the protestors, CPI (M) secretary said that in many parts of Dakshina Kannada district people do not get enough drinking water. After crossing the Nethravathi river to the south, the people in places like Munnur, Amblamogaru, Konaje, Harekala, Pavoor, Belma, Boliyar, Manjanady, Kinya, Talapady, Kotekar, Someshwar people go home early from the work place and be seen carrying water in the pitcher.
Although the tap water is there is Mangalore City and Ullal constituency, but it is lacking to fulfill everyone’s necessary. The Taluks like Belthangady and Bantwal have become the dessert land according to the government document. Belthangady in special is lacking high scarcity of water and as the numbers of Bore well are increasing the open wells get evaporated.
CPI(M) state secretary K R Shriyan said that the three districts of Coastal region have good agricultural land but do not have enough water require for agriculture. The DK district has 10 small and big rivers, which flows continuously, if small dams are constructed, then it can provide enough water to whole district, he said.
He also said that three rivers Kali river, Sharavathi, Varahi river flowing in Coastal region which is used for power plant can be later used for agriculture in the district.
