Mangalore : The clearing up of remnants, mostly charred in a fire, at the May 22 Bajpe AIE crash site at Bajpe, is progressing slowly amid rains and winds of the forest outside the damaged runway. The plane, with 166 Dubai passengers, had overshot the runway and got engulfed in a loud fire, killing 158 persons, breaking a wing of the Boing aircraft over weeks ago.
Kulur-based Fiza group, owned by Rizwan, is in charge of clearing the mess in a tender awarded to it. The work began on June 29 only after Kenjaru was readied to receive international planes by July first week.
The shifting process may take 2 weeks. Light parts are being shifted first, said ASB Naidu, chief engineer of Fiza Group. A crane has been brought to the site to remove heavy portions of the broken plane, such as the tail, one more crane may be employed this week.
Workers at site are given hand gloves, helmets, shoes and masks for protection. Naidu stated that a dozen workers are on the job at present. N. J. Rao of Air India is supervising the scene and activity.
Many valuable and helpful things have found under the debris and are taken out. A SSLC marks card (academic certificate also) and a digital camera were found out.
The debris clearance has been delayed as Civil Aviation hesitated before the inquiry team visited Bajpe. The month long delay, in spite of DC’s request to clear in May itself, has been widely criticized in public, as rains could spoil several of the important documents, from under the debris, since 2 weeks or more.
