Mangaluru : Indian Coast Guard Ship Amartya rescued fishing boat Tathwamasi with 22 crew belonging to Beypore on Sunday. The boat was in distress due to gear box failure and was drifting towards the rocks because of rough sea conditions. Ship’s technical team boarded the boat and rectified the defect and escorted it safely to Beypore.
ICGS Shoor rescued four fishermen stranded at Suheli Par Island, Lakshadweep on Sunday. They belong to fishing boat St Antony, which was grounded on Saturday and were surviving on rice and water. The Coast Guard personnel on board ICGS Shoor provided the fishermen with clothes, food and medical aid. Due to the presence of Cyclone Ockhi, rough sea conditions are prevailing. Many fishing boats have taken refuge in Karwar bay, Coast Guard PRO said.
In all, 32 fishing boats belonging to Tamil Nadu with 346 fishermen, 14 boats belonging to Kerala with 103 fishermen, 27 boats belonging to Goa with 565 fishermen, 21 boats belonging to Mangaluru with 114 fishermen and 35 fishing boats belonging to Malpe with 119 fishermen have taken shelter in Karwar. Similarly, fishing boats Al Nafisa with 9 fishermen and Misa I with 10 fishermen have entered New Mangalore Port for shelter. Both boats are from old port here.
