Mangaluru: At about 1030 hrs on 30 may 2018, a message wasreceived by maritime rescue coordination centre (mrcc) Mumbai from saint anthony afishing boat which was in distress with nine crew onboard in position 10 deg 14 min n,074 deg 43.2 min e ( 92 nautical mile from kochi light ) due to engine failure.
Immediately, coast guard ship vikram based at New Mangalore on routine patrolwas diverted by coast guard regional headquarters Mumbai to render assistance to thedistressed fishing boat and the ship reached the position of distressed fishing boat at 17:15hrs on the same day.
Ship's technical team alongwith tools and medical aids embarked the fishing boat Saint Anthony for defect rectification. However, engine defect could not be rectified at sea view being critical in nature with engine fly wheel broken and main engine crankcase jammed Subsequently.
the ship took the distressed fishing boat Saint Anthony under tow to kochi. After towing fishing boat, Saint Anthony along with nine crew for 57 nautical miles, the ship handed over the distressed boat, Saint Anthony to another fishing boat jasmine in position 10 deg 07.47 min n, 075 deg 51 min n at 0745 hrs on 31 may 18 (35nautical mile from kochi light) for onward passage to kochi port. Thereafter, the ship
resumed patrol in the designated area.
