Mangaluru: Upcoming November 21 will indeed be a revolutionary day in the field of radio jockeying when 27-year-old Kajal will make debut as the first transgender RJ in coastal Karnataka.
Hailing from a less privileged community, Kajal will shoulder the responsibility of uplifting the confidance of her community. Her first show will be an interview with another transgender on the struggles their community faces. Radio Sarang 107.8, a community radio channel run by a private college here, has decided to employ her as a permanent RJ on par with contemporary RJs and let her discuss any topic under the sky beneficial to listeners.
Kajal’s show titled Shubhamangala will be aired every Tuesday from 5pm – 6pm. She recorded her first show on Thursday. Abhishek, in-charge of Radio Sarang, said after a few episodes, Kajal will be aired live.
Born in Mandya in 1987, Kajal realised that she was undergoing a physical transformation at the age of 14. Though she grappled several physical and mental issues at this point, she not only completed her pre-university education but also scored an impressive 85% mark.
To find solace, she frequented visiting Mumbai and earned her livelihood by working as a bar dancer. She also got associated with a circus company as a dancer and hence happened to visit the coast of Karnataka for a show nine years ago. “I was so flattered with the love and respect people showered on me here that I made this place my permanent aboard. I wasn’t used to so much respect before,” Kajal told. Since then, she has been living at a rented house at Brahmavar in Udupi.
Always inclined towards acting and hosting shows, Kajal got a break through Rangabhoomi Theatre recently. She has bagged numerous awards. During one such award ceremony at a private college here that she came in contact with the team from Sarang.
