Mangalore : Three persons including a couple were arrested on July 26, Friday night on the charges of being involved in a child trafficking racket. The arrested include a couple and a quarry worker.
They are Lenita, Jossey, her husband from Bantwal and Rangavva from Badami, a quarry worker. The Child Helpline, social activist Vidya Dinker assisted in busting the racket.
As per information, the Child Helpline was informed about the racket by an Anganvadi worker named Rehana. Though the couple was contacted, they denied any involvement. When it was gathered that the quarry worker from Badami had sold her two month old baby to the couple, the Child Helpline was alert and it contacted Vidya Dinker who posed as a Muslim woman staying abroad and contacted the couple saying she willed to purchase the baby. Though Lenita initially refused, later it was agreed to exchange the child for a cash of Rs one lakh. Lenita also demanded Rs 25000 for creation of fake documens. As per the deal, it was decided to pay cash and take possession of the child at Tokkottu. The Child Helpline immediately informed SP Abhishek Goel and Mangalore Police Commissioner Manish Kharbikar and trapped the couple at Tokkottu. Rangavva was arrested from a quarry at Bantwal.
Police have also recovered a cash of Rs 90,000, credit cards, bank pass books and a fake press card.
Ullal police are conducting investigations.
