Udupi : In a special drive from January 1 to 25 as many as 71 silencers which violated the Motor Vehicle Rules and were seized by the police destroyed by crushing them under a road roller on January 31, Monday.

Speaking to reporters, Udupi SP N Vishnuvardhan said the drive was held following complaints from public regarding the nuisance caused by ear shattering horns. He said a similar drive was also launched last year and the same will also continue in the future.

As per the rules any horn with a sound of above 80 decibels will not be allowed. The silencers that were destroyed today are valued at Rs 25,000.
