Mangalore : Jawaharlal Nehru University (Delhi) Professor Emeritus and Unconventional Economist Prof Amit Bhaduri delivered the V Kakkilaya Inspired Orations 2014 on ‘Nationalism and economic development in the era of globalisation,’ at University College on August 23, Saturday.
The event was organized by Hosatu, M S Krishnan Memorial Trust in association with Samadarshi Vedike, Department of Ecomonic of Mangalore University and Planning and Research Forum of University College.
Speaking on the occasion, Amit Bhaduri stated that, more than the international market, the development model in the country needs to give emphasis on domestic market. Because in the domestic market, there will be equal distribution of products which will also reach the poor.
Speaking on gram sabhas and panchayats Amit said that, these have to be empowered to take decisions autonomously about the development of villages. This can be only possible if elected gram panchayat members become free from petty officials and must have financial autonomy. Today, Natural resources are in the hands of corporate houses with the active support of the government.
The present industries do not improve the living conditions of the poor or enhance the natural resources. Apart from it, it also destroys what is present, he said.
