Mangalore: The CPI(M), State Committee in Bangalore organised a series of demonstrations by its members for rightful demands made by downtrodden people all over the state, from Feb 7 to 14, and such a rally was held in Mangalore at DCO gates by local leaders
Speakers in today’s (Feb.14) meeting accused communal ways of depriving them of their rightful possessions in Karnataka. No effective steps were taken by the ruling Rightist (Brahmin-dominated) govt. for the welfare of those who are in majority, namely Dalits in Karnataka. There are age-old tradition in practice even today of untouchability and discrimination in govt. circles in regard to those remain uneducated and backward down the ages and need succor. 1756 instances of high-handedness practiced against Dalits were recorded in 2008-09. South India leads other parts of India in such communal excesses; the speaker stated.
The average annual earning in state is put at Rs32,000 where as that of Dalits is just Rs9,000 per year. Dalits do not get all the money under various schemes meant for their survival and redressal of grievances.
The rightful demands (Hakkottaya) relate to representation in budget upto 24% proportionate to Dalit presence in state. The reservation percentage should be raised from 3% to 7% for grants made to poor Dalits.
All Devadasi women enumerated in Census 2011 should have pension and rehabilitation facilities.
The new budget for 2022-12 due in February 2011, has to provide justice to Dalit communities according to numbers.
