Mangalore : The two ships ‘Dweepsethu’ and ‘MV Minicoy’ which was supposed to leave on Jan 10, Monday and Jan 11, Tuesday respectively has not sailed from the Mangalore Harbour.
Speaking to Mangalore today on the occasion, one of the passenger of ‘Dweepsethu’ said that he had taken the todays ticket to sail back to Lakshadweep, but since the crew members of the ship have staged the protest regarding the death of their fellow workers, the passengers are in trouble.
He also said that, they have no money and their family is in room. The Lakshadweep Development Corporation Ltd have also not agreed to give neither the food nor the allow them to stay in the ship.
The contractor of the Lakshadweep, Billal Moideen, said that one of the crew member of Lakshadweep Development Corporation Ltd, Shameem Yusuf Ali (40) has died at Ernakulam on January 9th at 3 pm due to heart attack. But the LDC had not responded to the incident and has not taken the responsibility of the dead body and kept in general hospital. Due to this matter, the other crew members staged protest against the LDC for its irresponsibility towards the staffs. The staffs of Cochin port, Bepur port and Mangalore port gave rendered their support for the protest and stopped the cargo and passenger ship for three days, he said.
He also said that, the passengers have booked ticket for Jan 10 and Jan 11 are requesting the LDC authorities to provide space and food in the ships, but the officials did not get any direction from the in charge.
Asif Azad, proprietor of Modern Transport, who is the transport agent of the ship, said that today at 2.30 pm LDC collector Dr Vasanth Kumar to reach Cochin will take the decision on the matter and simultaneously the enquiry will also be conducted in this regard, he said.
