Bangalore : The reservoirs are filling up, much to the glee of the farming community in the State.
But release of water from the KRS reservoir to Tamil Nadu has caused heartburn among the farmers, who question the rationale in catering to the neighbouring state, when their crops are withering. But, elsewhere in the State, hope grows on glimpses of a bounty.
A total of 8,052 cusecs of water has been released to Tamil Nadu, from the KRS dam at Srirangapatna taluk in Mandya district, inviting the wrath of farmers in the Cauvery basin. The inflow was 20,106 cusecs. The water level in the dam stood at 88 feet (15 tmc feet of water), against the maximum level of 124.80 feet. The level increased by three feet in the last 24 hours. The quantum of water release, which was 5108 cusecs, went up by evening.
A meagre 50 cusecs is being let into the RBLL canal for irrigation purposes, while the rest is going to the river. The Lakshmanateertha river, the lifeline of Hunsur taluk in Mysore district is in spate, due to heavy rains in the taluk and neighbouring Kodagu taluk in the last three days.
With rain continuing to lash Kodagu district on Tuesday, the DDPI has declared a two-day holiday for schools in the district. Sirsi taluk in Uttara Kannada district has been receiving heavy rain in the past couple of days. It rained continuously since Monday evening to Tuesday afternoon. A house collapsed on TSS Road in the town, injuring six inmates severely. All water bodies in the taluk are overflowing. There were good rains elsewhere in the district too.
Belgaum district received heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours. While Khanapur taluk recorded the highest rainfall of 415.7 mm, Ramdurg recorded the lowest of 2.4 mm. The old bridge in Khanapur has gone under water. The Malnad taluks of Teerthahalli, Sagar and Hosanagar in Shimoga district received heavy rain. In the last 24 hours, Agumbe received the highest rainfall of 150.4mm, followed by Hulikal (Hosanagar taluk) 146 mm. The level in Linganamakki dam rose to 1756.70 against the maximum level of 1819 feet.
The water level in Bhadra dam rose to 146 feet against the maximum level of 186 feet. The water level in Tunga dam has slipped to 587.72 metres from 588.21 metres against the maximum level of 588.24 metres.
Water level in the Krishna river has gone up with the release of 27,000 cusecs of water from the Hipparagi barrage near Jamakhandi in Bagalkot district.
The movement of vehicles on the Sullia-Puttur State highway was disrupted as soil caved in on it at Anegundi near Sullia in Dakshina Kannada district on Tuesday. The road was cleared after one hour.
Sea erosion has intensified at Kotapadukere, Kodikanyana, Parampalli Padukere at Brahmavar in Udupi district. Boulders which were placed to check sea erosion have been washed away by the waves.
