Mangalore : With a new Mangalore City Corporation council at least a fortnight away, it was the turn of the deputy commissioner N Prakash, who is also administrator of the civic body, to see firsthand how the city’s governance is being carried out. The deputy commissioner visited various wards in the core areas of the city to see the process of garbage collection and its disposal by contractors.
Accompanied by K Harish Kumar, MCC commissioner and environmental engineers, the DC went to Falnir Road, Kankanady, Shanti Nilaya Road, Nandigudda, Pandeshwar, Court, Port, Central Market, Car Street, Bunder, Kudroli, Mannagudda, Urwa, Kottara, Bejai, Kadri, Shivbagh, Bendore and other areas. While appreciative of solid waste management work in most areas, he pulled up the authorities concerned for shortcomings in other areas.
Prakash told TOI that as the administrative head of the civic body in between the terms of two councils that has just finished its term and process to elect a new council underway, it is his endeavour to ensure that things are on track. “I was not happy about cleanliness in areas like Falnir Road, Kankanady and Valencia and this is apparently due to lack of supervision,” he said, directing the commissioner to suspend the health inspector concerned.
Opining that it is his duty to ensure continuity in the city corporation’s governance and not to make take major policy decisions, Prakash said, “I will try and focus my attention on other areas of the city’s developments as head of the district as well.”
Harish said the problem was more the negligence of the contractor rather that the health inspector and the MCC while disciplining the health inspector will act against the errant contractor too, after the polls.-Times of India
