Mangalore: National Consumer Day was observed in Mangalore on December 24, Monday under the joint aegis of the District Administration, Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, District Federation of Consumer Organisations, NSS and Consumer Club of Mangalore University. Parvathi Appaiah, in-charge Principal of University College, inaugurated the programme held at the Ravindra Kala Bhavan of the College.
Deputy Commissioner N Prakash who presided over the function said there was a need for a greater awareness on consumer rights in the district. Even the Consumer protection Act has not been effectively used, he regretted.
MJ Salian, President of the District Federation of Consumer Organisations, who also spoke said there were nearly 56 consumer clubs in various schools putting in efforts to sensitize the public on consumer rights.
Dr Gananath Ekkar, NSS Convenor of Mangalore University said the Right to Information Act has made consumer protection more effective.
Sharanabasappa, Deputy Director of District Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department and several others were present on the occasion.
