Manjeshwar : A 19-year-old electrician from Manjeshwar, Kerala, who was declared brain dead after he suffered a severe head injury in an accident, has given life to two persons by donating his vital organs.
On Thursday, his liver and one kidney were transplanted at Apollo Hospitals, Bengaluru.
The donor, Vineet Raj, fell from the second floor while working at an under-construction multi-storeyed building in Nantoor on Tuesday. After being treated at a private hospital, he was shifted to A.J. Hospital and Research Centre, Mangaluru, where he was declared brain dead on Wednesday evening. His parents conveyed to the hospital authorities their wish to donate his organs. The hospital authorities informed the Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation (ZCCK) in Bengaluru, and also their patient from Hassan, who was being treated for acute renal failure. The ZCCK team came to the hospital early on Thursday and coordinated the retrieval of the liver and kidneys. They laid a green corridor and transported the liver to Mangaluru International Airport, from where it was to flown to Bengaluru.
According to A.J. Hospital authorities, one kidney was successfully transplanted into the Hassan resident on Thursday evening. The other kidney was given to Yenepoya Medical College in Deralakatte, Mangaluru. However, this kidney has not been made use of as the hospital could not find a recipient with matching blood group.
