Mangalore : The ‘World Milk Day’ was observed by DK District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Societies Union Limited at Kulshekar on June 1, Friday.
Speaking after inaugurating the event, director of the union K. Seetharam Rai said that before thirty years ago, milk production was not done on high scale. The producers used to sell milk at Rs.10 a litre and consumers got the milk at Rs 25 a litre and was a great exploitation of producers.
Recent years, the business has has been developed and the union has created around 7,700 new job opportunities for dairy farmers in the district and over 40,000 rural families are contributing milk to the dairy.
Executive Secretary Ravikumar Kakade, said that in DK, one person will consume 240ml milk whereas a person from North India consumes double to it.
Although the dairy produces a total of around 50 lakh litres of milk, the union sells around 35 – 38 lakh litres only. Apart from it, the union uses milk to manufacture other products like lassi, buttermilk, curd, ghee, and butter, he said.
The union distributed gold and silver coins to the winners of the Mysore Pak contest and dealers and distributors who made maximum business in each taluk.
