Mangalore: The Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists Union celebrated Vanamahotsava at Kadri Park on July 27, Wednesday.
Speaking after inaugurating the event, MCC Commissioner Dr K N Vijayaprakash said that people can always get good information through media. Through planting saplings we can make city green. This is been a meaningful programme.
He also said that during widening of road, the Mangalore City Corporation has to destroy the trees and planting saplings through this way it is a good initiative. Last year around 20,000 saplings were sowed in the city in various schools, colleges and other public places. This year 22,000 saplings will be planted and this will conclude in this month. Further its maintenance will also be monitored, he added.
This programme of making city clean and green is going on every year and further too this must continue, he said.
Speaking on the occasion Clifford Lobo, RFO said that these 22,000 plants will be planted and 18,000 saplings will be planted in beach area, 200 to 300 fruits and flower bearing plants in Kadri Park and 40,000 to 50, 000 Lavancha grass in Bengre area which will avoid sea erosion.
He also said that, we plant the saplings according to the design so that during the flowering season it will look beautiful. Last year the saplings were planted in Casia Cemetry, Nandigudde and other places, so that no one will cut the tree.

Pradeep D’Souza, assistant director of Horticulture and Madhu, environmentalist were present on the occasion.
