Chennai: The entire leadership of a southern political Goliath, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) came together in one lot at the General council meeting held in Chennai today, when CBI arrested its prime leader, lawyer and longtime Telecom minister A. Raja for valid charges against him in regard to 2G spectrum losses to Indian Govt, to the tune of Rs.1.75 lakh crores over 2 to 3years. It was 3G spectrum gains that nailed the earlier 2G spectrum losses deliberately carved by DMK in UPA rule through A. Raja who even showed disrespect to his own PM Manmohan Singh (also known as Yum Yum Singh).
DMK party bigwigs Karunanidhi and his 3 siblings (Azagiri, Kanimozhi and Stalin), Anbazhagan and other leaders were present.
They had gathered presumably to discuss their party strategy to win the May 2011 elections at a time when DMK supremo M.Karunanidhi, 85, was offering to retire and call it a day. There was internal rivalry between elder son M.K.Azhagiri and Tamil Nadu deputy CM M.K.Stalin, whom MK had groomed as his successor.
A.Raja’s money making attempts have thrown a spanner into the swift moving wheels of DMK, giving a glimmer of hope to Jayalalitha to lead her opposition AIADMK party to victory in the ensuing legislative elections due in May in Tamil Nadu. A.Raja is behind bars now, leading to consternation of DMK as a whole, who share the guilt indirectly.
AIADMK has made 2G spectrum as its poll plank for victory in the coming summer.
DMK in the current meeting of its national council will discuss various tie-ups with other local parties and the National Congress Party. DMK has formed a 5 member committee to negotiate seat sharing with these other parties.
