Mangaluru : The Ullal police arrested a man accused of harassing and torturing his wife for dowry; his wife later committed suicide.

The accused, Abubakar Siddik, resident of Nadar Mudoor married Ramlath, daughter of Hasanabba, from Konaje about 15 years ago. The couple had three children. It is said that about five years ago Siddik along with his mother Nabisa and sisters Mumtaz and Asma began harassing Ramlath to bring a dowry of Rs 5 lakh and jewelry. Unable to bear the torture, Ramlath went to her parents’ house on December 13, 2015, but committed suicide the following day. The Konaje police registered a case and later it was transferred to the Ullal police station.

Siddik had been absconding since the day his wife committed suicide. However, the police managed to nab him and produce him before the court; he was sent to judicial custody.
