Kundapur : The parents of a young housewife from Kodi near Brahmavar, who ended her life earlier this week, have alleged that their daughter had not committed suicide but was murdered .
Jyothi (33), daughter of Srinivas from Uppur, who was married to Raghavendra Nayak of Kodi on April 10,2009 had allegedly committed suicide recently unable to bear the dowry harassment inflicted on her by her in-laws.
In a complaint with Kundapur police, the deceased Jyothi’s brother has said that a cash of Rs 1.5 lakh was given to Raghavendra apart from 13 sovereigns of gold during marriage. The complaint also said Rs 90,000 cash was given after marriage following a demand made by Raghavendra. He said still his sister was harassed at her husband’s place.
Jyothi’s mother explained how the family had to avail loans to fulfill the dowry needs of Raghavendra. She says her daughter was not a girl who would end her life. Even Jyothi’s brother Prakash voiced a similar opinion. He also states that the failure of Jyothi’s husband and in-laws to attend the funeral, only substantiated the doubt.
