Bangalore: The Australian Govt will now pay damages (Undisclosed sum in Australian dollars) to Dr. Mohd. Haneef of Bangalore, wrongly implicated in a failed bomb case in UK in 2007.
Dr. Haneef worked in Queensland in 2007, but was arrested on terrorism related charges as Muslim, over a foiled attack in London (UK) and Glasgow (Scotland). His passport (visa) was seized and he was expelled from Australia.
However, an Australian legal inquiry in 2008 cleared Haneef of all charges, saying that it was a wrong done to him.
The confidential pay out, it is hoped by Australia Attorney – General Mc-Clelland, would apply closure to the ugly case and reimburse Dr. Haneef and his family for their sufferings in years.
It was a stain on Australia’s reputation as a fair lace to work and live, Haneef’s lawyer Hodgson concluded. Dr. Haneef is back in Australia to receive his dues and free to work in UAE now.
