Mangalore: The Deputy Director of Mines and Geology in Mangalore has praised the Bajpe region as a structurally stable area underlain by hard and fresh unweathered granite rocks that can withstand a moderate scale 2 earthquake. He was speaking to newsmen at the new Terminal Airport of Kenjaru today. He discounted exaggerated media reports on the character of the new Mangalore airport.
He referred to some laterite quarries in Adhyapadi village, about 300 to 400 metres away. But hard rocks are found the soft surface. No blasting is done for extracting laterite stones removed by a cutting machine.
Such extraction of laterites does not lead to land slides, Dr. Ravindra confirmed. Landslide elsewhere, as in Neriya or Kethikal occur under special conditions, not related to Bajpe. Adyapadi region, he clarified. Director M.R. Vasudeva of Kenjaru International Terminal Airport, was present at the meeting.
