Mangalore : Dr Shantharam Shetty, Vice-Chancellor of Nitte University inaugurated the 24th National Road Safety Week organized by DK District Administration in association with Regional Transport Department and Police Department at Town Hall on January 7, Monday.
Speaking after inaugurating the event, Dr Shantharam Shetty, said that around 50 crore people die in road accident every year in the world, while 1.20 crore people die in India, out of which 1.2 lakhs people die due to the accident.
He also said from few years, one person die in road accident every 6 minutes, but these days one die in every 3 minutes in India, while in America 37,000 people die in road accident since the awareness on it is more there.
IGP Prathap Reddy, said that death rate in the world is more because of accident and not due to other crime. Enforcement can do nothing, but people must take care of themselves.
Speaking about the tint glass, he said that the traffic police have removed the tint of 10,000 vehicles, so that they can see the drivers using mobile phones or not.
DC N Prakash, said that DK is a district of educators, having more number of educational institutions and Hospitals, so each one must do their duty of following the traffic rule individually.
He said that the accidental death rate in Mangalore is around 30-40, which is not good. We must take oath to fulfill our small duties like pulling seat belts, not talking in mobiles while driving and others, he said.
Presiding over the event, Deputy Speaker N Yogish Bhat said that the law enforcement and traffic system must be upgraded.
Today people get the license from the RTO department without appearing for the test; hence the RTO must take strict action against these things, so that everyone must know the minimum traffic rule before they drive on roads.
IGP Prathap Reddy released the poster of campaign. City Police Commissioner Manish Kharbikar released book on Road Rules and Safety authored by Sajipa Muhammed Nasir.
DC N Prakash distributed the Insurance Policy to the auto drivers. Dr Shantharam Shetty distributed First Aid kit to auto drivers of various Rickshaw parks sponsored by Red Cross Society.
