Bangalore: At the Centre for Airborne systems (CAS) in Defence Research & Development organisation (DRDO) laboratories, an explosion occurred during a lighting test reported today, injuring ten scientists.
The incident occurred on Dec.30 evening, as CAS was trying to develop an indigenous ‘AWACS’ system. An expert group had assembled before the accident happened, to study a controlled test ignition. There was a blinding flash of light when power was put on.
Doors and glass panes were shattered, with flying splinters injuring 10 people, six of them civilians. They were treated in Manipal Hospital and discharged. An injured CAS scientist Shankar Bhat suffered in the left eye. Four IAF officers were taken to Command Hospital for treatment.
CAS claimed that it was a minor accident and that no high damage was done.
