Mangaluru : The officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Mangaluru, seized nearly 4 kg of gold valued at more than ₹1 crore at Mangaluru International Airport and Mangaluru Junction on Saturday.
In the first case, a couple, from Kasaragod, were arrested at the airport for allegedly trying to smuggle 2.13 kg of gold concealed in a special abdominal belt under their clothes.
In the other incident, two passengers, who had allegedly smuggled gold from Nepal and were travelling in a train towards Kozhikode, Kerala, were nabbed with 16 gold biscuits concealed in the inner pocket of their pants, Vinayak Bhat, Deputy Director, DRI, Mangaluru said on Sunday.
The officials intercepted Hassan and Sameera after they arrived at Mangaluru airport from Dubai at around 8.40 a.m. on Saturday. During a body check, it was revealed that both were wearing skin coloured belts and it was found to be concealed with some heavy object.
On opening them, it was found that a brown rubber-like compound was stuffed inside. Gold of 23.99 carat purity weighing 2,137.04g was extracted from the said compound. Its value was estimated at ₹66 lakh, he said.
The passengers were arrested and produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mangaluru, and were later released on conditional bail, Mr. Bhat said.
In the second incident, the two passengers travelling from Panvel to Kozhikode were caught at Mangaluru Junction.
The officers found some heavy objects around the waistband of their trousers.
Cutting the inside stitch, 16 gold bars ( 8 gold bars each person) were recovered.
Both the passengers, Moideen and Samsudheen, admitted that the bars were of foreign origin and were smuggled by them during their international travel from Dubai to Kathmandu, Nepal, recently.
During the interrogation they further stated that after getting cleared from Kathmandu International Airport they crossed the land border at Birganj and entered India.
They performed several cut journeys by road before boarding the train at Panvel. The 16 gold bars weighed 1,865.6g and were valued at ₹56,33,880.
Both the passengers were arrested and produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mangaluru, on Sunday.
