Mangaluru: Residents of Jokatte and Kana area in Suratkal have been seething in anger after incidents of pet coke ‘ash’ accumulation was sighted yet again on houses, shops and business establishments, schools and prayer halls in the area. Since the last two-three days people have been complaining of air pollution because of the ash, reportedly emitted by MRPL units.
Concerns have been raised on the negative impact that the ash, found in the surroundings including water sources may have on the health of the people.
Earlier, following several complaints lodged by the residents, the Karnataka Pollution Control Board had deputed a team of experts to study the problem. The team had later directed MRPL to comply with six conditions related to the operation of the unit. It is gathered that MRPL has complied with all the conditions, except for ongoing work of shifting of silos, which is expected to be completed by December.
Meanwhile following the recent complaint a team of officials from MRPL’s environment wing visited these places on Wednesday and collected the samples to ascertain if the black dust seen in Jokatte was indeed from the MRPL unit.
“The problem has been persisting over the last five-six years. On getting complaints the officials visit the area and assure of solving the problem. However, nothing has been done so far,” alleged the locals and demanded that the district administration should take action against MRPL.
