Gurpur: An empty Oil Tanker of national petroleum company with a capacity of over 1000 liters of Oil or Gas, lost control on Dec.25 during day time going at high speed in the Gurupur Market on a narrow road where cars had been parked by the road side near a temple, crashing in to a tailoring shop and tea stall before coming to a stop in a damaged condition.
The shop and the stall were broken, the Eco and Swift cars parked nearby were totally damaged and those sitting inside were injured. 2 women going to a temple nearby met with the tanker accident killing one on the spot, and heavily injuring the other lady who was taken to AJ Hospital in Mangalore as an accident patient for treatment. The injured car patients also were taken to Mangalore hospitals to save their life as they were in a shock and unable to move.
The driver of the Oil Tanker that created a horrible seen in Gurpurpet, informed the police that he did his best to avoid maximum losses when the brakes failed and the tanker entered shops hitting the cars on way. He was miraculously alive when the road accident at Gurupurpet had ended.
The eyewitness’s of the tragedy told the police who had rush to the spot from Bajpe that the tanker ignored all road safety rules and was going at a high speed from Kaikamba to Mangalore. The Oil Tanker had a Tamil Nadu registration number and obviously, the driver did not know how to drive his vehicle on a narrow road in a busy locality of shops and temples like Gurupur.
Ahead was a road going up and running through an ancient bridge on the Gurpur River, and if the breaks had failed there, you have to imagine what colossal damage would have occurred at that place.
The police and fire brigade lost no time in detaining the oil tanker and the driver who cause the accident, and registered a case for rash driving even if it was an empty oil tanker that crashed in to shops to cars and injured half a dozen people while killing a woman standing on the road side.
The fire brigade on reaching the accident spot, had switched off MESCOM connections to avert any large scale tragedy.
