Mangalore: Speaking at the MCC meet held on December 19, Wednesday, independent corporator Mariamma Thomas has alleged that an encroachment of a public road by a builder, has not yet been cleared by the authorities.
She also chose to say that the builders lobby was coming in the way of the MCC officials in clearing illegal encroachments and said no action followed against builder who had encroached a road to lay a lawn.
MCC Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar later said the road in question came under the purview of the NH department and that the MCC was yet to get the power to clear the encroachment on the road.
Later, the issue of plastic ban and the increasing plastic wastes in the city, came up for meeting.
Harinath, a Congress Corporator said plastic wastes wee increasing since the past fortnight and people were seen discarding wastes on roadsides. Suratkal corporator Harish said garbage bins in some places have been removed adding to the problem as door to door waste collection has not yet begun in many places.
To this complaint, the Commissioner said the door to door waste collection has begun in some places while it would soon be initiated in many more places.
Corporator Jayanthi B Shetty accused the MCC of not taking any steps to do repair of interior roads. Yet another corporator urged to restart the operation of Civic Tiger to ensure free footpaths. The Commissioner said the operation has been stopped after the human rights commission took objection to the same on the grounds that it caused harassment to the poor.
