Mangaluru : World Environment Day on the theme – Connect with Nature was observed at Sahyadri Campus on Friday, June 9.
The two day workshop on ‘Industrial Pollution Control,’ was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, Mangalore.
Dr. G. Srinikethan, Professor, NITK Surathkal inaugurated the two day workshop. In his address he highlighted the vital role of environment in maintaining a balance in the social as well personal life of every individual. He quoted that Environment is for everyone and it is the moral responsibility of every individual irrespective of one’s profession to safeguard the environment.
Prof. K.S. Lokesh, Registrar, JSS Science and Technology University, JSS Technical Institutions’ Campus, Mysore delivered a theme speech on the occasion. He spoke about the importance of having belongingness towards nature and considering oneself to be an integral part of nature. He stressed how important it is for every individual to selflessly work towards the betterment of the environment. He concluded his address by quoting that ‘Modern Technology Owes an Apology to Ecology.’
Mr. P. Purandar Shetty, Manager Personnel, BASF, Mangalore spoke about various environmental issues and presented several facts and figures pertaining to the same. Dr. S. Manjappa, R&D, SCEM briefed about the purpose of the workshop. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, welcomed the gathering and the guests.
Dr D.L. Prabhakara, Director, SCEM, presided over the function. Mr. Rajshekar Puranik, Environmental Officer, KSPCB, Mangalore presented the vote of thanks.
The inaugural function was followed by technical sessions viz., ‘Sustainable Development through Industrial Activities’ by Dr G. Srinikethan. ‘Climate Change Causes – Impacts and Control’ by Prof. K.S. Lokesh. The third session was on ‘Risk Assessment and Emergency Maintanance Plan in Chemical Industries’ by Dr. G. Srinikethan. Fourth Session was on ‘Solid waste Management Including Bio Medical and Hazardous Waste’ by Dr. Lakshmikanth and the last session of day one was on ‘EIA Notification – 2006’ by Prof M.M. Kamath. The second day will comprise sessions on ‘Water and Air Pollution Modelling for Predictions of Impacts’ by Dr. Manoj Kumar, ‘Traffic Impact Assessment for Large Scale Developments in India’ by Prof M.N. Srihari, ‘Presentation on Emerging Technologies in Waste water treatment for Recycling and Reuse, by Dr. C.T. Puttaswamy, ‘Environmental Lean Insight to EIA Notification’, by Dr Thimmaiah, ‘Environmental Regulation’ by Sr. S Nanda Kumar. An industrial visit to MRPL, Surathkal has been organized to the participants as a part of this two day workshop.
