Mangaluru: Mangaluru International Airport under the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will provide air navigation services to aero planes with more sophisticated equipment. The modern equipment being installed at this airport now would provide enhanced safe navigation services to flights. The total revamp of air navigational services equipment would cost approximately around Rs 18 crore and the projects would be completed by end of March 2017.
This Airport is also in the process of replacing its three main navigational equipments. They are very high frequency omni directional radio range equipments, mono pulse secondary surveillance radar and Instrument Landing System (ILS). The very high frequency omni directional radio range equipment provides navigational services to flights crossing over Mangaluru Airport. The equipment is now at Kaikamba about 12 kms away from the airport. The same is being shifted from there to the Airport premises and advanced equipment valued at Rs 4 crore would be installed to replace the old one.
The mono pulse Secondary Surveillance Radar, which is now at Mura, about 1.5 kms away from the Airport, would also be shifted near the old terminal building and new equipment priced approximately around Rs 13 crore would be installed. This will guide the pilots in landing and take-off at the airport and also in positioning flights in the air one after the other.
The ILS, which helps the flights in landing, on the airport would be replaced with a new one at an approximate cost of Rs 60 lakh by January 2017.
