Bangalore : A former syndicate member of Bangalore University, whose tenure ended a few months ago, was taken into custody for questioning Monday in connection with a cash-for-marks scam run by two daily-wage employees in the evaluation section of the university.

Deputy commissioner of police (central) B R Ravikanthe Gowda confirmed the development and said they are questioning Dr K B Vedamurthy based on information provided by two persons arrested recently.

Gowda said police had registered a case of cheating and forgery against Chandra Sekhar and Gangadhar, daily wage employees in the evaluation section of the university, a few days ago. The duo were arrested by the Ulsoor Gate police for allegedly taking money from students by promising them good marks in their examinations.

“The accused duo confessed to their crime during the interrogation and at same time revealed the names of others who were helping them. This is subject to verification. The police called Vedamurthy for questioning on Monday regarding the matter. We will arrest others if we get evidence against them,” Gowda said.

Ulsoor Gate police said the scam came to light when an anonymous complaint reached the police station recently. The police started to investigate the matter after taking up a suo-motu complaint and discovered that a marks scam was being run in the university. They subsequently arrested Gangadhar and Chandrashekhar.

Based on information from the duo, the police questioned Vedamurthy, who contested the 2013 Assembly elections from the Chikmagalur constituency on a KJP ticket.

He was picked up from the university campus on Monday.

Police said the marks racket involved the accused persons approaching invigilators and bribing them to provide marks for students and also tampering with the marks while preparing result sheets.
