​Karkala : In a shocking incident, a woman died after a family attempted suicide at their residence at Mahalaxmi Lane, Karkala on Friday morning.

While Gauthami (34) breathed her last, her husband Govinda Nayak (40) is battling for life at a hospital in Manipal while their children Karthik (7) and Sudarshan (11) are said to be out of danger.

It is said that financial crises forced the family to take the extreme step.

Sources say that the family was surviving with the couple’s meager income; however, Gauthami was unable to work due to health problems. Though they spoke to relatives regarding their difficulty, none of them came forward to help. Unable to cope with problems, the family mixed poison with rice and consumed it. The incident came to light when the neighbours heard the children’s screams. The family was given first aid and was rushed to a hospital in Manipal, but Gauthami breathed her last.

A case has been registered at Karkala town police station.
