Mangalore : Shameer, a resident of Ashraya Colony, Vamanjoor, sold his two-day old child to a Kerala-based couple through a middleman Badruddin and was arrested by the police, said City police chief Seemanth Kumar Singh.
Speaking at the press meet held at his office on August 18, Wednesday, he said that K Abdul Khader, who assisted him, is absconding.
He said that, Shameer took the infant from his wife Rahmath’s hands even as she was leaving the hospital upon her discharge on June 28 and handed it over to Badruddin and Khader and sold it to a childless couple in Kerala for Rs 49,500. The police have also taken strict action against the couple for buying the child.
Mother of the child, Rahmath had filed a complaint with Panambur police and a case was filed under sections 34, 363, and 368 IPC and column 20 of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) of Children Act, 2000. Further the investigation is on regarding the reason behind selling the child by the father and buying of other couple, he added.
Now, the infant has been given to the mother and police have recovered the amount from the accused. Rahmath had delivered the child at Fr Mullars Hospital on June 26 and the incident took place two days later.
