Mangaluru: The fifth and final phase of the five-year ‘Swacch Mangaluru’ drive of Ramakrishna Mission resumed on Sunday with volunteers doing the first ‘shramdan’ in Nandigudda and Marnamikatta areas of the city.
The volunteers, in six groups, removed debris scattered on the roadside and cut the overgrown roadside weeds in Marnamikatta. The steps leading towards a ground in Nandigudda were cleaned by removing plastic waste and sand. The drains near Nandigudda Circle were cleaned.
The surroundings of both bus shelters at Nandigudda and Jeppu were cleaned of cobwebs and weeds. Later, the shelters were painted.
Nearly 200 illegal flex banners and posters were removed. Those who had put them up were called up and told not to do so without permission.
The cleanliness drive was carried out from 7.30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. sponsored it.
Meanwhile, Ramakrishna Mission and Nagaraika Salaha Samiti, Surathkal, carried out their eighth week’s Swacch Surathkal Abhiyan at Idya area. Idya West Side, Narayana Guru Mandira, Killeria Mosque, and school campus were cleaned. More than 20 civic groups and NGOs participated in the effort. The Ramakrishna Mission Swacch Puttur team initiated the third phase of the abhiyan in front of Mahalingeshwara temple in Puttur.
