Mangalore : The National Pulse Polio programme for the year 2011-12 will be implemented in the district on February 19, Sunday and Polio drops will be administered to all children from 0-5 years, said District Health Officer O.R. Srirangappa.
Speaking at the press meet held at District Health Department office on Feb 17, Friday, he said the polio drops will be administered to about 165136 children in the district. While drops will be given to children in Mangalore city and rural areas in the district on Feb 19, Sunday at the first phase and second phase on April 1.
While 921 booths will be set up for the administration of drops in the district, there will be 6 additional mobile booths which will be placed. A number of 3788 vaccinators have been deployed and 187 supervisors and 21 transists team for the target of 165136 children.
Around 655 health department officials, 2102 Anganwadi workers, 1045 Asha workers and 105 programmes implementation officials, in charge officials and doctors will work on the programme.
The polio vaccination will be given in District Health centre office, Taluk Health centre office, government hospitals, Community Health Centres, primary helath centre and City Family Welfare Centres.
The district administration has made all arrangements to implement the programme efficiently.
He said that the possibilities of disease are more in migrant population. Hence the health department has made the arrangement to identify the migrant labourers in Dakshina Kannada district and the teams have been made to visit the building construction sites in the city and vaccinate the children on the spot.
He said that in the year 2011, only one polio affected case was reported from Howrah of West Bengal and the number of polio cases in the world has reduced considerably in recent years with the yearly efforts of the department. Further the department will work to diminish the polio case in the country. Hence now the department has more responsibility to maintain the statistics and health of children in the country.
The department will also hold door to door polio vaccination and the people must support it and give the details of the children present in the house. Most of the flats do not allow the vaccinator to enter and get the details; hence they must render support to make India as the polio free nation.
Other medical officers like Dr Rukmini M, Dr Balakrishna Rao, Dr Rajesh, Dr Kishor, Dr Arun Kumar and others were present.
