Mangalore: The Fisheries Dock at the old Mangalore Port is presenting a pathetic picture. With fishing almost suspended now due to rough weather though the official ban comes into vogue on June 15, one can see hundreds of fishing boats both small and large anchored at the port in a highly haphazard manner, thanks to the unavailability of enough space to accommodate all the 1500 boats in Mangalore fishing industry.
Though the government has sanctioned funds for the construction of the third stage extension of the fisheries yard here, the works too have been suspended as of now, due to confusion over its blue print. The government has sanctioned a sum of Rs 57 crores for the purpose.
Several boats which have not found a place here have anchored at other places There is also a suggestion that mini jetties if set up in Bolur, Bokkapatna and Ullal may help in solving the problem to some extent.
As of now, the present dock is 600 meter long and there is scope for 350 boards to anchor in one row, while the rest of the boats have to adjust themselves or anchor in other places. Presently one can see boats anchored here in seven rows, close by each other. There is also the possibility of the boats suffering due to collision while parking at such close range.
