Bangalore : This year the 59th Karnataka Rajyotsava Awards will be conferred on five achievers hailing from the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.
Reportedly, the achievers like Asian Games gold medalist Mamatha Poojary, senior journalist Sandhya Sathish Pai, Jaya C Suvarna from Mulky residing in Mumbai, Vanase Narayana Ganiga from Udupi district and Sampaje Sheenappa Rai from Dakshina Kannada district have been chosen for the Rajyotsava Awards out of 59 persons chosen for the award this year.
Apart from it, Athlete Poovamma from Kodagu who studied in Mangalore and who won the gold in Asian Games, singer S Janaki, ISRO retires scientist Dr Kasturi Rangan, Justice Venkatachaliah are some of the other awardees.
Achievers were chosen by the panel of selection committee comprising of Literatteur Channavira Kanavi, Dr Baraguru Ramachandrappa, Marulasiddappa and H G Siddaramaiah.
The committees have chosen the awardees from 1700 applications which were received for the award and also who have not applied considering their achievements in the 15 fields including Literature, drama, music, Yakshagana, sports and cinema.
The awards will be conferred on the achievers on the occasion of Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations held at Ravindra Kalakshethra on November 1 at 6.30 pm.
Mamatha Poojary from Hermunde village near Karkala has been chosen for the awards in the sports category. While Vanase Narayana Ganiga from Udupi district and Sampaje Shinappa Rai from Dakshina Kannada district get the awards in the Yakshagana and Bayalata category. Dr Sandhya Satish Pai from Udupi district gets the award in the media category and Jaya C Suvarna gets the award under the non-resident Kannadiga category.
