Mangalore : The third court of junior magistrate (first class) convicted Mangalore City Corporation Mayor Abdul Aziz, with two months of imprisonment and fine of Rs 10,000 in connection to violation election code of conduct on September 8, Monday.
The punishment was pronounced by Justice Undi Manjula Shivappa and also ordered that the convict will undergo an additional month of imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine.
The case was filed as per the complaint filed by Assistant election officer Pravinchandra Karkera for canvassing at Padavu labour colony by placing election-related materials in his car on May 6, 2008 when election code of conduct was in operation.
The car belonging to Aziz was found to be having stock of pamphlets containing the photographs of the national president of Congress party and the then candidate from that party. Apart from it, Printed copies of the manifesto issued by Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee were also present.
As per the complaint, rural police sub-inspector (crime) Bharati, had investigated the case and filed charge sheet in the court.
Mohan Kumar, assistant public prosecutor, had presented the case and was present on the day of hearing on behalf of the petitioner.
