New Delhi : Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee died in New Delhi today. He was 93 years old.
Vajpayee was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on June 11 with kidney infection, chest congestion, urinary tract infection and low urine output.
According to a statement issued by AIIMS, Vajpayee died at 5:05 pm.
The 93-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, a diabetic, had one functional kidney. He had suffered a stroke in 2009 that weakened his cognitive abilities. Subsequently, he developed dementia.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of Vajpayee.
Since Wednesday evening, Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and many other leaders across the political spectrum visited the former prime minister.
The BJP stalwart, who has been a Parliamentarian for over four decades, was among the founding members of the party.
Vajpayee was awarded the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna by the Narendra Modi-led government on March 27, 2015. Apart from Bharat Ratna, Vajpayee was conferred the Padma Vibhushan Award in 1992 and the Best Parliamentarian Award in 1994.
His sincerity and commitment towards his work is known not only in the political circles but among the populace of the country. Vajpayee’s birth date, December 25, was named Good Governance Day in 2015.

His futuristic policies across various sectors touched the lives of each and every citizen of India. It was due to the perseverance and struggles of Atal Ji that the BJP was built brick by brick. He travelled across the length and breadth of India to spread the BJP’s message, which led to the BJP becoming a strong force in our national polity and in several states,” PM Modi said.
