Mangalore : Social activist T J Abraham said that Forums of the Christian Catholic community have opposed the decision of central government name the University in Srirangapatna after Tipu Sultan since it is an ‘insult’ to Catholicism.
Speaking at the press meet held at Poonja International on Feb 15, Friday he said that the Forum demands the university to be named after Rev Ferdinand Kittel instead of Tipu Sultan, since he has contributed anything for the education.
He also said that university in Srirangapatna must be named after Rev Kittel, who compiled the first Kannada-English dictionary and was a strong Kannada activist.
He said that Tipu has not contributed anything for the education but his only contribution was towards his religion, by forcefully taking 70,000 Christians from the coastal region to Srirangapatna and converting them into Islam.
Kannada Christians Association president Raphael Raj said that the movement will be intensified and protests will be held in Bangalore and Mangalore in the third week of February.
