Bijapur: A four-year old girl fell into a dry borewell at a farm at Nagathana village in Bijapur district late on Tuesday evening, police
Police said Akshata, whose parents are labourers, was playing when the incident occurred in the farm where they live.
Both the parents were engaged in work at the time of the incident.
Police said efforts were on to rescue the child. Instances of children falling into open borewells have been making the headlines quite a few times but very little has been done to ensure their safety by the authorities.
In July 2006, a child named Prince fell into an open bore well in Kurukshetra in Haryana and a massive rescue operation was launched amid a heavy media coverage to rescue him. Prince was rescued after 48 hours. But such tragedies didn’t stop. In 2012, a 5-year-old girl Mahi fell into an abandoned open bore well near Manesar in Haryana and couldn’t be saved.
Last month, a A three-year-old girl today fell into an abandoned borewell in Vadod village in Bhavnagar in Gujarat and was stuck inside as rescue teams rushed to the spot.
In September last year, a six-year-old girl, who fell into a 400-feet borewell in a village in Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu, died in the hospital after a nine-hour-long rscue battle.
