Mangalore: The New Mangalore Port has registered significant progress in terms of both container traffic and railway traffic. The port has registered a growth rate of 31.65 per cent as on 15-5-2013 by handling 5.09 million tonnes of traffic as against 3.87 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year.
The growth in traffic is due to increased handling of crude oil and other products by MRPL. The container traffic has seen a rise to 6144 TEUs as against 3462 TEUs as on 15-5-2013.
A press release from NMPT said the largest parcel of 257 packages of machinery for SUZLON was handled in the vessel M.V. CLIPPER MARINUS and the second wheat vessel M.V. SIMONA called at the Port in May 2013. The second marine container MV KOTA HAPAS is likely to call at the Port on May 22.
As many as 6 cruise vessels with 5627 passengers called at the Port during April 2013 as against 3 vessels with 3800 passengers handled during the corresponding period of previous year.
The release also stated that during the NMPT Chairman P Tamilvanan’s visit to Coimbatore to participate in the Logistic Summit, the traders there were keen on routing their cargo through NMPT. The foundation for the two additional covered storage sheds for storing wheat, maize, fertilizers has been laid and the shed will have a storage capacity of upto 22000 tonnes of cargo.
