Mangaluru : Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim has invoked provisions of the Goonda Act against Hasan Sadiq, a resident of Vitla, who has been involved in nine criminal cases in the district. Mr. Ibrahim passed the orders following a proposal submitted by Superintendent of Police Sharanappa S.D.
Mr. Sharanappa said Hasan Sadiq has been involved in cases, among others, in attempt to murder, kidnapping and violation of provisions of the excise Act.
He said that they felt the need to invoke provisions of the Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum Grabbers Act, 1985) against Sadiq to maintain peace and order in the district. The police have lodged Sadiq in the Udupi district prison. He would later be moved to a Central Prison. The order of imposing Goonda Act would be reviewed by a committee of High Court judges, Mr. Sharanappa said. As many as four persons from the district had so far been booked under the Goonda Act. The Act was invoked against three persons in 2014. The Mangaluru city police have invoked Goonda Act against five persons including 31-year-old Safan Hussain, who is an accused in the rape of the medical student in Deralakatte in 2013.
