Mangaluru : The State government should lay emphasis on higher education, opined physician Dr Srinivas Kakkillaya.
He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop on Second PU Kannada syllabus, for the Kannada lecturers, organised jointly by ‘Padaka,’ PU Kannada lecturers association and DK district PU College Principals Association at Ganapathy PU College in Mangaluru on Tuesday.
Stating that the support given by the government towards education is insufficient, he lamented that the grants given by the government to the education sector is getting lesser with every passing year.
He meanwhile urged the State government to concentrate on implementing Kannada language as the medium of instruction at the primary-level and added that children’s knowledge develops when they attain primary education in their mother tongue.
This will give them clarity of thought and expression.
Dr Kakkillaya said that maximum number of students who take second PU examinations, write the exams in Kannada, which shows that the language still holds relevance in terms of primary education.
There are several loopholes in the teaching methodology of languages, which needs to be addressed. The language teachers are not only required to be prolific in their subject but must have also read major literary works in the respective languages.
This will help them to develop good teaching aptitude. In these days when the seats from KG classes to PG classes are sold, the quality of education is questionable, he pointed out.
Department of PU Education Deputy Director Thimmaiah, Ganapathy P U College Principal Rathnakar Bannadi, DK district PU College Principal’s Association President Sarawathi and ‘Padaka’ president Dr Latha were present among others.
