Mangalore: Speaking to participants of a state level teaching development workshop at the University College Dr. Kota Shivarama Karanth on Thursday for the graduate Mathematics class teachers by several sponsors of Mangalore University (MU) and Govt. College education department, Vice Chancellor of MU, Prof. T.C Shivashankara Murthy emphatically stated that those talented students, passing out of graduation classes and going abroad for the lust of more money, should be asked to stay back and serve our science and technology research workshops. They should be provided all fundamental facilities they crave for, to conduct valuable research workshops, so as to prevent the talent drain from the country. India, he added, was the third largest educational beehive in the world. The literacy in India is only 56% and only 3 persons secured Nobel Prizes in a hundred years. Only 16 articles covering science/technology research were published in international periodicals in the last 5 years. China had 96 and Brazil 36 research essays published abroad. It appears that Indian students have lost interest in genuine research matters in science or technology, Prof. Murthy pointed out. We must attract bright students towards pure science and technological research, or else, we are sure to receive a blow to our economy, he added.
There are no laboratories in 50% of our high schools. We should take steps to make students a rush to Physics/Science Blocs and subjects in schools. There are greater research workers conducted in our IITs and I.I.Sc.s than in our universities. The Govt. has to allocate more funds for research enterprises, he stressed.
Prof.H.R.Natraj Urs, Jt.Director of College Education, presided, asked teachers to make Mathematics easy for children. Several scholars were present. The workshop lasts till March 26.
