Ahmedabad: Gujarat government released 285 prisoners from various state jails on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, according to an official press statement here.
One hundred and fifty prisoners who were serving life terms and had undergone 12 years of imprisonment were released with the remainder of their terms “set off”, the release said.
Also released were 129 prisoners who had completed 75 per cent of their jail terms.
Six prisoners suffering from protracted illnesses, who were unable to move on their own, too, were released through ‘state pardon’.
The cases of each prisoner released today were scrutinised by the Jail Advisory Committee.
Habitual offenders, rape convicts, those jailed for offences related to national security or narcotics trade, and undertrials were not among those released.
