Gurgaon: After a woman who worked at a Gurgaon pub was gang-raped, the local police has said women cannot work at pubs or nightclubs after 8 pm.
On Sunday night, a woman who had completed her shift at a pub at a mall was getting into a taxi with her brother when a group of six men grabbed her. They forced her into their Maruti 800, took her to a flat nearby, raped her, and then left her outside the Chhattaprur metro station. The victim’s brother and her taxi driver are eyewitnesses to her abduction; five people were arrested yesterday for the crime.
Instead of offering better protection for women, the Gurgaon police has made the late-evening shift off-limits for them.
The police has also reiterated that Gurgaon’s many call centres employ more than 30,000 women, and that each call centre has to provide transport for women who work the late shift. The drivers of all cars used to drop these workers home have to be registered.
Yesterday, the Gurgaon police confirmed that a young mother was raped by two men in a moving car on Friday. Her baby son was with her when she was assaulted. The men offered the victim a lift and when she refused, they forced her into their car.
