Mangaluru: Deputy commissioner S Sasikanth Senthil said on Monday the district administration will take corrective measures with regard to pollution of Gurupur river based on the reports from Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).
He told reporters that the district administration has written to KSPCB and CMFRI to ascertain facts about pollution and seeking solution. “We have already formed an expert committee to study the issue.
According to initial reports, the main reason for pollution of Gurupur river is the reduction of fresh water flow towards the sea. The flow of fresh water has been stopped during summer as a dam has been built across the river at Maravoor.
As a result, the Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) level increases. We will take necessary action only after going through the reports from KSPCB and CMFRI,” the DC said.
Water in the river has turned into black at Malavoor, Sultan Batteri, Hoige bail and other surrounding places. Meanwhile, residents on the river bank also feel stink.
Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) commissioner Mohammed Nazeer on Friday has warned underground drainage maintenance (UGD) contractors, who allegedly let sewage flow towards the Gurupur (Phalguni) river.
