Patna: In the world Cup Kabaddi Tournament finals, held on Sunday night at the Pataliputra sports Complex in Patna (Bihar state), watched by local Bollywood star and BJP former shipping minister, Shatrughna Sinha, India led by a young unassuming Karkala girl Mamatha Poojary of South Central Railway (Secunderabad) in her 20s, defeated a strong Iran team by 25-19, a clear six points lead to lift the world cup in home country for the inaugural event.
Mamatha said Iran had given Indian team a close shave and fright in last year’s Asiad semi finals while losing the match on a single point but this time as her brother Vishwanath in Karkala watched breathlessly, India had a 19-11 points (8) lead at half time, so there was less tension in the second half.
Mamatha as captain gave all the credit for the stupendous win to her Co-players coming from all over India.
She added that the world cup was won for India by her team as India had hosted the 16-teams tournament this year.
Japan was defeated in the semifinals by India this time. Every on India side played very carefully against Iran in the finals, the skipper revealed.
When told that CM, DV Sadananda Gowda was happy to awards her Rs5 lakhs, she said more was expected from Railways in promotion and cash for her and the wining team.
